Black Hall Farm

At Black Hall Farm our self catering holiday accommodation is set within Black Hall Farm – a family owned and run working farm, which has been using organic farming practices since 2002.

At Black Hall Farm we are committed to preserving our land and have recently been accepted into both a high-level Stewardship Scheme with Natural England, which requires us to deliver effective environmental management on our land and a Woodland Management Scheme with the Forestry Commission which demands sustainable woodland practice.

Black Hall Farm extends to around 550 acres and runs from the River Teme in the Teme Valley to Offa’s Dyke on Llanfair Hill.  The farm is mostly grassland and our main enterprise is the production of organic beef and lamb, mainly supplied to Tescos.

We have 550 ewes, which are mainly Easy-Care (a revolutionary breed of sheep which requires minimal shepherding and veterinary care, sheds its wool in the summer, does not need shearing and yet offers excellent meat yields and lambing ratios) and Clun Cross Welsh.

We have 70 Suckler Cows which are Black Galloway, Saler Cross and Hereford Cross.  The calves are reared and kept until they are about eighteen months old when they are sold for fattening to other organic farms.

As much feed as possible is produced as forage on the farm and all the livestock graze outside during most of the year.  In the winter months they are fed silage hay and forage rape and turnips.  The idea is to produce as much good quality organic meat as possible while at the same time keeping the system sustainable within the farm and minimising bought-in feed.
